ThIs apartment building is presented as a monolithic volume of brick. This refers to the existing historic facade on the quay. By using different types of window-openings and outdoor spaces, the volume divides itself into 3 segments. Through this the volume fits in the small-town character of the area, while it switches between the scales of the two adjacent buildings.

The facade arrangement finds a balance between the horizontal and vertical plasticity. Vertical piers give the facade an articulation while at the same time the openings provide a panoramic view.

Passing through the gate to the back offers a surprise. The gallery wall to the courtyard gives a whole new character through its transparency and lightness as a contrast to the seriousness and soundness of the brick facade on the quay. This modern façade fits to the heavy traffic of the Vulcaanweg at the back.
